How to Donate to the Annual Kodiak Public Library Association (KPLA) Book Sale

Where to donate:

Items donated to KPLA can be dropped off at Cost Savers at 2161 Mill Bay Rd.

(For donations over 5 boxes of books, please contact hello@kpla.us to coordinate drop off.)

What to donate:

Gently used books, CDs, and DVDs in good condition. We accept all genres.

What to recycle instead:

  • Anything that is moldy, burnt, water damaged, or dirty
  • Anything with excessive marking, pages missing, or damaged covers
  • Textbooks or reference materials over 5 years old
  • Reader's Digest Condensed Books
  • Magazines

Books unsuitable for donation can be taken to Threshold Recycling.

What happens to your donations?

Books will be sorted and stored, then sold at our major fundraiser, the Crab Fest Annual Book Sale. Proceeds from the sale support the Kodiak Public Library collections and programs. Books may also be used for Little Free Libraries, book swaps, and other community reading initiatives.

Anything unsuitable for sale will be recycled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Help! I donated something that I wasn't supposed to donate! How do I get it back?

Email hello@kpla.us with a description of the book(s) and approximately when it was donated/what it was donated with.

I have a lot of books to donate. Do I still take them to Cost Savers?

If you have more than 5 boxes of books, please email us at hello@kpla.us to coordinate a drop off directly to our storage site! If you have an event coming up (bazaar, book swap) that may have a lot of books left over for donation, please contact us with the details.

Can I drop off my donations at the library?

No, please drop donations off at Cost Savers at 2161 Mill Bay Rd. The library has limited storage space.

I have books that are more valuable than your average used book. How do I make sure it sells for the appropriate amount?

You can still drop the books off at Cost Savers for donation, but please email hello@kpla.us to let us know what you have dropped off and if you have a value in mind. We try to catch these books with our normal sorting process, but it is not guaranteed, so any extra information you can provide is helpful!

How do you determine prices for the book sale?

Prices are based on how many books we have, quality of books, etc, and may change year to year. Books may be priced by the bag, individually, or a combination of both at the discretion of the KPLA Board of Directors.

Can I help with the book collection and sorting process?

Ok, you might not have been thinking this, but the answer is yes! There will be volunteer opportunities throughout the year to help prepare for the book sale. Please follow our Facebook page (Kodiak Public Library Association) for volunteer opportunities, or email hello@kpla.us for more information.

What is the KPLA?
