Community Beekeeping Project

Bee Books

Have You Heard the Buzz?

The Kodiak Public Library is excited to welcome back our Community Beekeeping Project. This community project will have ample learning opportunities for all ages from weekly hive checks to a Honey Bee STEM kit. Check out our bee books, do some fun science, or join a discussion.

Beehive Check

Join a Weekly Hive Check!

Hive Checks will occur weekly, weather permitting, on Mondays at noon. Sign up here!

This is the best way to jump in and learn about the bees! Beekeeper Judi Kidder, of Lakeview Apiary, opens the hive and explains what the bees are doing. We usually see eggs, larvae and maybe even babies being born! Discover the world inside the hive.

We will take your questions all along at this family friendly event!
There are various ways to attend. Space is limited to 15 people per hive check. Sign up here or call the library to reserve your spot either outside with the beekeeper for the best close-up experience or inside the library looking through the window where you can still get a good view and ask questions from behind glass. Children under 5 or those unable to wear a head net must watch from inside the library. Children 5-13 must be supervised by an adult. To allow everyone a chance to attend a hive check, first time attendees will have priority.

Judy Kidder

Meet the Apiarist

Judi Kidder is an extraordinary Kodiak beekeeper and owner of Lakeview Apiary. The library purchases the bees and this year her visits are sponsored by Kodiak Public Library Association. In addition, Judi has donated her time, equipment, and hives to educate the community through this library project. Thank you for lending us your knowledge and expertise, Judi! Thank you to KPLA for sponsoring Judi's visits. Learn how to support KPLA here!
